Girilambone Railway Station

Girilambone railway station stands on the disused railway line between Nyngan and Bourke, in central New South Wales, about 44 kilometers north-west of Nyngan. It was in use for just over a century, from 1884 to 1986. The railway line only lasted a few years longer than the station. It was damaged during flooding in 1989, and was never repaired, so it has been disused ever since.

I learned about the station when I was passing through Nyngan in July 2018, and I made a detour to photograph it. The station had obviously been completely abandoned for years. Nobody had made even a token effort to keep people out, so I was able to thoroughly explore it. There's a certain beauty in the natural process of decay, and I thought the place was quite photogenic.

There's not much information about Girilambone Railway Station available online. I obtained most of my facts from this website.

None of the buildings even had doors, so I had no trouble getting inside. Nothing remained of the original furnishings, and the most interesting thing that I saw was the remains of a sign that listed railway parcel rates.

After photographing the station, I stopped at a few places between Girilambone and Nyngan to have a look at the abandoned railway line. Three decades without maintenance had taken their toll. The sleepers and bridges were rotting away, some of the rails were missing, and there were even some trees growing between the tracks.

I caught a glimpse of a few feral pigs in the distance as I was photographing the line, and I could hear them grunting for some time afterwards.
